Biomass vs. Biodiesel: Picking the Right Biofuel

Biomass and biodiesel both cut fossil-fuel use, but one fits high thermal demand while the other fits vehicle and generator fleets.

Biomass: heat and power from solid fuel

Biomass systems burn agricultural residue, wood chips or briquettes to produce steam, hot water or electricity. They suit factories with constant, high thermal demand, tea, rubber, textile or food processing.

Pros:

  • Very low fuel cost if residue is available locally.
  • Replaces expensive diesel or LPG boilers.
  • Scales from small steam systems to multi-megawatt plants.

Cons:

  • Needs fuel storage and handling.
  • Best where thermal demand is steady, not intermittent.

Biodiesel: drop-in fuel for generators and vehicles

Biodiesel from waste cooking oil or feedstock can replace diesel in generators, boilers and compatible vehicles. It suits sites that already run diesel equipment and want a lower-carbon drop-in replacement.

Pros:

  • No major equipment changes for blends.
  • Reduces reliance on imported diesel.
  • Works for backup generators and transport fleets.

Cons:

  • Higher fuel cost than biomass residue.
  • Requires reliable feedstock supply.

Which to choose

Choose biomass if you have steady heat demand and access to cheap solid fuel. Choose biodiesel if you run diesel generators or vehicles and want a cleaner fuel without new boilers.
