Biogas
75% of Sri Lanka's functioning biogas systems are engineered and operated by Bio Fuel Lanka.
Turn organic waste into clean energy through anaerobic digestion — fuel, electricity, and a high-grade fertiliser, all from what you'd otherwise throw away.
Biogas is a biofuel produced from the breakdown of organic waste. When organic matter — food scraps, animal waste, sewage sludge, municipal or biodegradable waste — decomposes in an anaerobic environment (one without oxygen), it releases a mixture of gases, principally methane and carbon dioxide. Because this decomposition occurs without oxygen, the process is also known as anaerobic digestion.
Anaerobic digestion is a natural form of waste-to-energy that uses fermentation to break down organic matter. Thanks to its high methane content (typically 50–75%), biogas is combustible and can be used as a fuel for vehicles, heating, or generating electricity.
The Process
A biogas plant receives organic waste — typically livestock manure and organic industrial or food waste. The dry solids contain carbon, which the process transforms into biogas: a compound of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).
The waste is mixed in a receiving tank, heated to 38–52 °C, and pumped into the digester where the biogas is produced. The biomass stays in the digester for 2–3 weeks, after which the fermented slurry can be used as crop fertiliser — one with less odour and a significant reduction in greenhouse gases.
Effective Microorganisms (EM)
EM is a combination of beneficial, regenerative micro-organisms that exist freely in nature. The mixture increases the natural resistance of soil, plants, water, humans and animals, and improves soil fertility and crop quality. EM consists of around 80 different disease-suppressing micro-organisms, each with a specific task, that enhance one another — synergy in action.
The applications are numerous, including reducing dependency on fertilisers and pesticides in agriculture, restoring polluted or degraded land, and addressing water, air and soil pollution.
