Most Sri Lankan food processors, hotels, farms and plantations share a problem: a steady stream of organic waste that costs money to remove and creates odour, effluent and compliance headaches. Biogas turns that liability into an asset. The same waste becomes a renewable fuel, and you keep a nutrient-rich fertiliser at the end.
How biogas works
Inside a sealed digester, micro-organisms break down organic matter without oxygen, a process called anaerobic digestion. It produces two things:
- Biogas, mostly methane, which can be burned for heat or run an engine to generate electricity.
- Digestate, a stabilised, nutrient-rich slurry that works as an organic fertiliser.
Because the process is enclosed, it also captures methane that waste would otherwise release to the atmosphere, a meaningful climate benefit on top of the energy.
What you can feed it
Biogas suits wet, organic and high-strength waste streams, including:
- food-processing and kitchen waste (factories, hotels, resorts, canteens);
- agricultural residues and animal waste (poultry, dairy and piggery manure);
- abattoir and market waste;
- high-strength effluent from breweries, distilleries and food plants.
Consistent feedstock makes for a stable, well-sized system, so the first step is always understanding what your operation produces, and how much.
Who it suits in Sri Lanka
Biogas is a strong fit wherever waste and energy demand sit on the same site:
- Food and beverage factories, turn process waste into boiler or process heat.
- Hotels and resorts, convert kitchen waste into cooking gas or power, while solving back-of-house waste.
- Farms and plantations, manure and effluent become on-farm energy plus fertiliser.
The double benefit
Most renewable projects save on energy. Biogas saves twice:
- Energy, displacing LPG, furnace oil or grid electricity for heat and power.
- Waste disposal, removing the cost, odour and regulatory exposure of getting rid of organic waste, and replacing bought fertiliser with digestate.
That combination often makes the economics stronger than energy savings alone would suggest.
Things to plan for
A good system is sized around your actual waste volume and its energy content, with attention to feedstock consistency, retention time and how you will use the gas (heat, electricity, or both). This is where experience matters, an over- or under-sized digester underperforms.
